California unveils major energy-efficiency investment

California has hailed its new programme for energy-efficiency investment as the largest in the history of the US.
More than $3 billion has been earmarked by the state to comprehensively retrofit homes and introduce other measures to slash energy consumption among Californian businesses and consumers.
According to the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC), these energy-saving projects will cut the state's greenhouse gas emissions by approximately three million tons each year by 2012.
"This investment in California's clean energy economy is just what we need to create new jobs for our communities and fight global warming pollution," said Lara Ettenson, director of California Energy Efficiency Policy at the Natural Resources Defense Council.
Michael Peevey, president of the CPUC, told Reuters that California will be taking a wide-ranging approach to energy efficiency.
"Capturing the full energy efficiency potential in the state requires more than simply providing rebates to support the installation of the latest and greatest widget," he commented.
Last week, the California Energy Commission published new draft regulations for the energy-efficiency standards of flat-screen televisions.
