California university aims to cut costs with energy-saving measures

Three projects aimed at reducing costs through innovative energy-saving measures are now underway at San Diego State University (SDSU).
According to the Daily Aztec, the university's Aztec Recreation Center (ARC) expects to save approximately $50,000 (£31,792) a year following the installation of energy-saving light fixtures.
The California institution's official newspaper also reveals that the SDSU Children's Center is making use of a thermal water heating system that will save an estimated $5,000 a year.
In addition, a solar photovoltaic system has been installed at the university's Aquaplex and is expected to reduce the energy costs of the facility by nearly 50 per cent.
All three energy-saving projects were implemented in partnership with the Associated Students of SDSU's Green Love initiative, which aims to promote sustainability in the university and its surrounding communities.
Commenting on the advantages of the Recreation Center's energy-saving lighting, Green Love commissioner Grant Mack said: "Not only do the lighting fixtures in the ARC save on electrical expenses, but they also give a sense of natural daylight."
