Businesses urged to invest in energy-saving systems

Companies can save a considerable amount of money by making their heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) systems more energy efficient, it has been claimed.

According to GreenTech Media, an HVAC system is usually a firm's "largest discretionary source of energy demand" and therefore the most significant controllable expense on a business premises.

The website states that financial savings represent the most important reason for improving the energy efficiency of HVAC equipment, although doing so can also lead to increased longevity and a reduced risk of mechanical failure.

In addition, embracing energy-saving technology can have major benefits in terms of public relations and marketing.

"Consumers appreciate companies that are environmentally responsible," the website explains.

"The installation of an energy-efficiency system can and should be communicated to current and prospective customers."

GreenTech Media states that the use of such a system could reduce energy consumption by up to 20 per cent.

In the UK, the Carbon Trust recently launched the Industrial Energy Efficiency Accelerator (IEEA), a new £15 million initiative aimed at cutting energy costs in the manufacturing sector.
