Baltimore puts in place energy efficiency programme

Consumers in the US city of Baltimore in Maryland are to be targeted in an energy-saving campaign aimed at encouraging power conservation and cutting greenhouse gas emissions.
The pilot programme, dubbed the Baltimore Neighborhood Energy Challenge, is aimed at encouraging consumers to reduce the amount of electricity they use, according to the Associated Press.
The scheme, which will run for nine months in selected areas before being rolled out across the entire city if successful, is aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 15 per cent by 2015.
According to Baltimore's sustainability coordinator Sarah Zaleski, the city will fund the initiative through donations from a variety of groups and federal stimulus funds.
Products such as Enigin's Eniscope, which offers real-time energy monitoring, greatly aids energy-efficiency in commercial and industrial sites and ensures informed decisions on conservation measures.
