Back energy-saving initiatives for buildings, report urges

The US government has been called upon to support a plan to make buildings in the country energy efficient because, apart from reducing the nation's carbon footprint, this would create business opportunities.
According to the proposal by the Center for American Progress think tank, public policies to encourage widespread private investments in energy efficiency need to be created.
The report said that the proposals, which could be backed by a $500 billion (£304 billion) kitty supported by public and private funds, would result in 40 per cent of commercial and residential properties being energy efficient by 2020.
It would also create around 625,000 full-time jobs, supported by the emergence of energy saving businesses.
Increasing awareness among consumers about green measures such as retrofitting buildings, availing capital for conservation measures and making it possible for people to monitor their power consumption have also been proposed.
The US Department of Energy is already supporting a raft of energy conservation efforts and renewable power generation projects across the country.
