Art Gallery Sets Green Example

Nottingham Contemporary, a new 3000 sq m public art gallery in the UK which opened on November 13th, was created to be equipped with the most recent energy-saving solutions to demonstrate a large building can have high levels of energy efficiency and sustainability.

The building, representing the largest facility of its kind in the UK, incorporates a host of ecological features, including high-performance double glazing, natural insulation and daylight sensor-controlled lighting.

The gallery's designers adopted a "holistic approach to the energy efficiency and sustainability of the project", according to the Architects' Journal.

As the collective conscience is focused on environmental concerns, fuelled by governmental campaigns urging us to react and energy prices rising, this type of initiative should ideally be adopted by all industries and all businesses. Including the energy-efficiency factor in the equation when a building is created is extremely worthwhile, for both environmental and financial purposes, and contributes to promoting a positive image.

This gallery is a fine example in achieving energy efficiency. It was described as "an elegant, high-quality response to what was an immensely challenging brief".

Currently on show at Nottingham Contemporary is a David Hockney retrospective, running from November 14th to January 24th 2010.
