Arizona State University installs LEDs in energy-efficiency project

Arizona State University (ASU) has stepped up its efforts to become more energy-efficient, reduce its carbon footprint and save money by investing in new light emitting-diode (LED) fixtures.
Six parking structures at the higher learning institution's Tempe campus have been retrofitted with the LED fixtures, which the university hopes will save up to $127,000 (£78,000) annually in energy and maintenance costs.
Bonny Bentzin, director of sustainable business practices at ASU, said that "exploring the value of LED lighting solutions is an important component" of the university's green strategy.
"In addition to the superior level of illumination offered by the LED fixtures, installing energy-efficient lighting provides financial and environmental benefits."
The university is also phasing out more than 2,000 150 watt metal halide fixtures across its facilities and replacing them with LED low bay luminaires that will cut energy usage by 1.5 million kW hours.
A similar conservation project is being carried out by the University of North Alabama, which this week received funding from the US Department of Energy.
