Ambitious call from developing nations could encourage energy-saving initiatives

Developing countries will step up their climate change targets and make concessions if rich nations agree to cut emissions by up to 40 per cent by 2020, an official at the summit told the UK Guardian newspaper.

According to Luis Alfonso de Alba, who was the lead co-ordinator on climate change for developing countries at the summit, the figure is based on suggestions from United Nations scientists.

"We need to see the mid-term targets go much higher, and we want to see all the developed countries, including the US, move at the same pace", the negotiator is quoted as saying by the newspaper.

"The most important message is that assuming individual responsibilities to fight climate change can start immediately, and by doing it immediately it will be easier to reach an ambitious agreement at Copenhagen."

Last week saw the G8 leaders agree to cut emissions by 80 per cent by 2050 through a variety of energy-saving initiatives including investing in green products and encouraging investment in clean energy.ADNFCR-2541-ID-19261403-ADNFCR
