A Spin On Solar Energy - Video

If we mention solar energy to you, in your mind an image pops up of a flat panel - whether it be an array across a roof or a field or a small portable device - well look at the picture as V3Solar are developing a system that puts a spin on solar panels and solar energy.

Thanks to V3Solar capturing the suns energy does not mean a flat world, not only is the shape of the V3 Spin Cell more interesting, this system is way more efficient in producing solar energy, they claim it can generate over 20 times more electricity than a flat photovoltaic (PV) panel. The V3 Spin Cell has the same surface area of flat cells but it combines light concentrating lenses, conical shape, advanced electronics all with a dynamic spin.

The unit is made up of two cones, the inner cone is basically hundreds of triangular PV cells, while the outer is a hermetically-sealed lens concentrator, made up of a series of interlocking rings and equally distributed tubular lenses on the outside surface, which is static.

The cone is also angled at 56 percent which helps capture the sun's light at more angles than flat PV panels, this accommodates the different angles of the sun throughout the year and provides a unique thermal management system. This cooling is needed as light is transferred to electricity in nanoseconds, while heat is transferred in milliseconds (1000 times longer) but the Spin Cell captures the light, generates the electrical energy and then as it is spinning the inner cone’s temperature is reduced.

As the V3Solar Spin Cell is still being developed it would be easy to dismiss the claims, but in recent third party testing it was proven to generate over 20 times more electricity than a static flat panel and the layer of PV cells never exceeded 95 degrees Fahrenheit (35°C) due to the cooling spin.

An exciting development and an interesting design, but we’re not too sure whether the blue cones will look good strewn across a roof or field.
